Once known as Casteldurante, the town of Urbania lies along the banks of the Metauro and owes its present name to Pope Urbano VIII. With medieval origin it was the scene of battles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, it has very interesting monuments and buildings, which are well worth a visit, including the Barco Ducale, summer residence and hunting lodge of the Dukes of Urbino, and the church and the cemetery of the Cimitero delle Mummie, known for the curious phenomenon of natural mummification.
